Royal Birkdale Unveils Future Changes

Royal Birkdale

Open Championship Venue

Ten-time Open Championship venue Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, has announced a series of course changes and the addition of a spectacular new par 3 that will enhance the experience at this historic facility.

Dating to 1889, Royal Birkdale’s current course enjoyed a substantial revision in 1931 and has experienced multiple alterations since that time. The latest plan involves changes intended to elevate the challenge and beauty of the layout while preserving the traditions and heritage that make Royal Birkdale so iconic. The work at Royal Birkdale will be carried out in two phases. Phase one will begin in the fall of 2023 and conclude in spring 2024. Phase two will start in fall 2024 and conclude in spring 2025. All work will be completed in time for the club to host the Open Championship again in 2026. The work will include a brand new Par 3 that will play as the new 15th, along with redesigns for three other holes.

In addition the plan calls for renovations to the bunkers, tees and pathways throughout the course. If you have never visited the Lancashire Coast for golf, you are certainly missing out. There are 9 great links courses all within two hours of Southport, a great seaside resort town. You can play three Open Rota courses plus some other classic links courses and stay in one hotel for the entire time. That is not only convenient but also leaves time to explore Liverpool and other places in the region.
